Benefits of Green Buildings and How India is Transforming

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is a nationally and internationally accepted rating system for the design, construction and operation of the well-performing green buildings. The system is designed to be comprehensive in scope, yet simple in operation. The real estate in Pune is slowly approaching sustainable development. With a variety of architectural designs and amenities provided, residential apartments, such as projects in Balewadi, Talegaon and other developing areas of Pune are grabbing the eyeballs of the buyers and investors due to the environmentally friendly design and surroundings of the project.

Benefits of Green Buildings:

A green home can have great benefits, of course, both tangible and intangible. The immediate and the most important benefit is in the reduction in water and operating energy costs, from day one to the entire life cycle of the building.

Green Buildings save 20-30% of energy and 30-50% of the Water.

Intangible benefits are:

• Excellent Daylighting- Day-lighting is a practice of putting the windows or different openings so that during the day, the natural light provides internal lighting. Specific consideration is given to day-lighting while planning a building when the point is to boost visual comfort and reduce energy use.

• Enhanced air quality: It enhances the indoor air quality and at the same time, achieves energy efficiency.

• Health and well being of the dwellers: Data from several types of research people living in green units reported fewer headaches, itchy eyes, breathing problems and Shaken Baby syndrome symptoms than those living in conventional homes.

• Conservation of scarce natural resources

A green building is more likely to succeed in its objective if sustainable practices are incorporated right at the time of planning.

Chennai has set a recent example in green building development. The city has approximately 321 registered Green building projects. Out of which 37% is residential, 36% are commercial and 6% are railway stations and the rest are few factories, landscape ad existing buildings. Chennai alone accounts for more than 10 % of structures certified as eco-friendly by IGBC. Chennai has witnessed a good transformation in the past three to four years. Aiming at developing more, Chennai is ranked 4th after Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru among the Green cities across the nation.

So, today’s trend of concrete housing material will soon be replaced by green, self-sufficient buildings and towns. The time is now demanding the shift towards a sustainable and green environment.
